Afghanistan and Eastern Europe would be better comparisons, though neither really match the scale and intensity.
Urban America is not comparable to the protracted war zones that we have in SWTOR. We are only exploring certain parts of the planets, usually ones with high strategic value that were heavily contested. We still run into war orphans on major Republic planets (the Empire enslaved them all, as the Sith Sorcerer and some codex entries explain).
